City of London

Summary

The City of London Corporation is the governing body of the City of London, also known as the Square Mile: the financial district of London. The Corporation is dedicated to a vibrant and thriving city, by looking after, promoting, and supporting a diverse and sustainable London.

In 2023, the Corporation approached the FPA to create a bespoke e-learning package on fire doors for their entire workforce. The FPA produced a white label product meaning it would be owned by and branded to the Corporation’s specification, and added to their internal Learning Management System for roll out to their departments.

Challenges

The FPA recognises that every organisation has unique training requirements and a generic approach does not always address specific challenges and nuances faced by different sectors or companies. This was the case for the Corporation who required a customised training product tailored to the variety of buildings managed by the City of London.

Terence Short, Principal Fire Safety Advisor at the City of London said, “With a total of 960 properties, the City of London’s fire safety department relies on the FPA to deliver high quality training to our departments that has been developed to our own specification. The FPA’s dedicated trainers work closely with us to ensure the City of London Corporation’s departments receive consistency. With a vast array of differing buildings, it is important to us that we work with highly competent training providers to ensure advanced technical risk and business continuity are always considered beyond the scope of standard training.”

Reflecting on the product he created for the Corporation, Learning and Development Digital Specialist at the FPA, Ollie Gwyther said: “Working closely with the City of London, we developed an extensive e-learning module tailored to fire door inspection across the variety of buildings managed by the City. I really enjoyed the opportunity to support this respected organisation, and the proactive approach they took to finetuning the tailored e-learning content – which we developed through videos, assessments, and interactive elements – ensured the creation of a robust and comprehensive course for the City of London’s staff.”

How the FPA helped

The FPA offers a wide variety of reputable fire safety CPD training courses and qualifications delivered by expert trainers in the classroom, online, and at client premises including the following e-learning courses which can be customised to specific organisations via a bespoke learning package or white label product:

Results and future plans

The FPA’s white label products enable organisations to enhance their training programmes by maintaining their brand identity but with the benefit of the FPA’s technically robust content, which was the training route required by the City of London Corporation to satisfy their staff needs given their diverse portfolio.

Terence added, “We are delighted to work with the FPA once again in producing tailored training to suit the most diverse portfolio of any local authority such as Barbican with the largest entertainment centre in Europe, its own schools, universities, social housing, 12,000 acres of parkland, and 12 major historic buildings including the Lord Mayor of London’s home, Mansion House, The Old Bailey, and Guildhall to name but a few. Supplying local authority functions and policing services for the financial and commercial heart of Britain means fire safety is always high on our agenda. The FPA are our preferred company for bespoke fire training as we embrace their ethos of training and educating.”
