Fire Testing

Standards Testing

IMO Standard Test Rig

Our IMO (International Maritime Organisation) testing facility is the only facility that is UKAS accredited to IMO MSC/CIRC.848 (as amended by MSC.1/CIRC.1267). It is used for the evaluation and approval of equivalent fixed gas fire-extinguishing and fire suppression system testing as referred to in SOLAS 74, for machinery spaces and cargo pumprooms. It can be used for both inert and reactive systems, such as halocarbon systems.

The IMO fire test facility is a 10 x 10 x 5 m (L x W x H) airtight compartment with adjustable vents. It is capable of withstanding the 8 MW fires prescribed by the IMO test standard, with integrated suppressing fire systems and overpressure vents for handling any fires that become unsafe.

Our IMO maritime testing facility is connected to a smoke extraction system that removes harmful gases, filtering and cleaning them to protect the environment. A drainage system surrounds the floor, connected to an oil separator for removing any wastewater, oil, AFFF etc. that might also harm the environment. These features allow our maritime fire testing facility to be used for many other applications (beyond fire suppression testing) where high intensity fires demand a sterile and easily controlled environment.
