Fire Resistance Testing

The Fire Protection Association provides one of the most versatile and comprehensive fire testing and research facilities in the UK at our Gloucestershire-based laboratory.

We operate fire resistance test furnaces in collaboration with global safety science leader, UL Solutions and in 2025 we are expanding our facilities to provide further fire resistance testing in partnership with fire safety engineering specialists, PartB. Once complete, our facilities will include 4 fire resistance test furnaces to support manufacturers who require independent fire testing and product certification via UL Solutions, and meet the evolving demands of the fire engineering sector through PartB.

Reaching temperatures in excess of 1000°C, the large-scale vertical furnaces and smaller-scale vertical and horizontal furnaces are able to test to a number of test standards. We aim to provide test reports within 4 weeks of the test being conducted.

Our fire resistance testing laboratory is UKAS accredited for a range of fire resistance test standards including building products and systems, windows and fire door testing, and fire stops and joints:

Building products and systems tests

  • BS 476 Part 20 Fire resistance test (general) for building materials and structures
  • BS 476 Part 22 Fire resistance test for doorsets
  • BS EN 1364-1 Fire resistance test for walls and partitions

Windows and fire door tests

  • BS 476 Part 22 Fire resistance test for doorsets
  • BS EN 1634-1 Fire resistance and smoke control tests for door and shutter assemblies, openable windows and elements of building hardware

Fire stops and joints tests

  • EN 1366-3 Fire stopping of service penetrations
  • EN 1366-4 Fire resistance test for building materials and structures (excluding seal test with movement)

Why test at the FPA laboratory?

  • Independent and impartial results
  • 4 furnaces which provide a variety of options on specimen configuration, including a 4m wide furnace and the ability to test junctions between horizontal and vertical elements
  • Excellent reporting turnaround times
  • Extensive facilities and technical capabilities
  • Working in collaboration with UL Solutions for product certification needs
  • Working in collaboration with PartB for fire engineering needs
