This qualification provides learners with the knowledge suitable for fire risk assessors defined as a ‘competent person’ by the UK Government’s Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire Safety Act 2021, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010. Delegates will need to demonstrate they are capable of carrying out fire risk assessments and have the underpinning knowledge needed, at the required depth, to confirm occupational competence.

Qualification structure and aims

L31: Fire Risk Assessment Fundamental Principles

Undertaken as a 5-day tutor-led course, providing the underpinning framework for practical fire risk assessments including:

  • The legal framework
  • Building construction and the risks posed from fire
  • Fire growth and hazard identification
  • Fire safety in the protection of people at risk

Assessment: a written response to a series of essay-style questions within 4 weeks of undertaking the course.

L32: Health, Safety, and Security

The aim of this unit is to:

  • develop knowledge, understanding and skills to contribute to the health, safety and security of the workplace
  • demonstrate effective working relationships
  • conduct fire risk assessments in a professional and ethical manner, complying with organisational and legal requirements

Assessment: a written response to a series of essay-style questions which may require a professional discussion with your assessor.

L33: Prepare to undertake fire risk assessments

Undertaken as a self-study module, you will be required to meet the following criteria:

  • Determine the necessary level of competence
  • Ensure the necessary level of resource
  • Ensure that responsibilities are understood and agreed

L34: Undertake and report on fire risk assessments in simple premises

You will be required to complete a minimum of 3 fire risk assessments over a variety of building types and provide the specified evidence to achieve this unit.

 

Assessment

You will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence consisting of self-study, online activities, class-based assessment, and practical examples of work. You will be required to complete a minimum of 3 fire risk assessments and provide the specified additional evidence to achieve this qualification. The total qualification time for this certificate is 300 hours.

This Level 3 Fire Risk Assessment training course is suitable for employees and consultants who intend to carry out fire risk assessments. There are no formal requirements for entry onto this qualification.
