In response to the need for a robust competency framework the FPA has teamed up with the Awarding Body for Building Education (ABBE) to provide a comprehensive route of qualification for fire risk assessors.

This fire risk assessment training course is suitable for employees and consultants who intend to carry out fire risk assessments. There are no formal requirements for entry onto this qualification.

Level 3 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment consists of four units which must be completed for the successful acheivement of the award.

Unit 1: Work in a safe and professional manner - The aim of this unit is to demonstrate effective working relationships, and conduct fire risk assessments in a professional and ethical manner, complying with organisational and legal requirements. Undertaken via distance study and e-learning and evidenced throughout your qualification portfolio.

Unit 2: Fire risk assessment fundamental principles - Undertaken as a 5-day class-based course, this Unit will provide an understanding of the fundamental principles which underpin practical fire risk assessment:

  • The legal framework
  • building construction and the risks posed from fire
  • fire growth and hazard identification
  • fire safety in the protection of people at risk

This unit has been awarded 29 Institution of Fire Engineering (IFE) CPD hours.

Unit 3: Prepare to undertake fire risk assessments - Undertaken as a self-study unit, you will be required to produce a portfolio of specified evidence to meet the Unit criteria:

  • Determine the necessary level of competence
  • Ensure the necessary level of resource
  • Ensure that responsibilities are understood and agreed

Unit 4: Undertake and report on fire risk assessments in simple premises - (those who are registered to complete level 4 diploma do not need to undertake this module). The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with
the ability to:

  • Gather and evaluate the evidence necessary to support a fire risk assessment
  • Determine the hazards and risks that exist
  • Evaluate ways to remove or reduce the risk
  • Report significant findings and propose an action plan

Assessment:

You will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence consisting of self-study, on-line activities, class-based assessment, and practical examples of work. You will be required to complete a minimum of three fire risk assessments and provide the specified additional evidence to achieve this qualification.  The total qualification time for this Certificate is 300 hours.
