The FPA’s RISC501 combustible cladding assessment method up for award

The FPA is proud to announce it has been shortlisted for Fire Safety Project of the Year at this year’s Fire and Security Matters Awards.

The shortlisted entry acknowledges the FPA’s recently launched RISC 501: Fire Test and Assessment Method for External Cladding Systems through RISCAuthority. Led by the FPA’s Technical Director, George Edwardes, the test method has been developed to address the limitations of current UK testing criteria for combustible cladding systems in high-rise buildings.

In particular, RISC 501 evaluates the fire performance of non-loadbearing external cladding systems, going beyond the basic life safety standards to ensure resilient systems that can effectively prevent vertical spread.

RISC 501 can be conducted alongside BS 84141 or as a standalone assessment. More information about this new test method can be found here

Speaking about the shortlisted entry, George said: “It’s wonderful to see the FPA’s research project being recognised on an industry scale. The FPA is continuously seeking ways to improve building resilience, and we actively welcome collaboration for future research. Good luck to all the other finalists.”

To be held on 12 June 2024, the third Fire and Security Matters Awards celebrates innovation and achievements in the fire and security sectors.

Specifically, the Fire Safety Project of the Year award recognises a project that has “delivered significant improvement(s) to fire safety” in relation to people and/or premises. Sponsored by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers, other finalists include Coopers Fire, Drax Technology, Hochiki Europe, and more. The full list can be viewed here
