Developed with input from both the fire industry and the housing sector, this blended learning course aims to meet the needs of those with responsibilities for fire safety in the residential sector, to meet the expectations of both building fire safety and residents, and to provide those who are engaged in building fire safety management with the tools to succeed.

Learning outcomes

The course will address the competencies required to manage fire safety when operating in residential buildings:

  • Understand the legislation that is applicable to fire safety in High Life Risk Premises as defined by the Building Safety Act 2022 and its impact on the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, the Building Act 1984, and associated regulations within Approved Document B and Regulation 7 of the Building Regulations 2021.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively manage people and teams in the management of fire safety in relation to new building work and in occupied buildings.
  • Understand the key principles of risk management with regards to ongoing fire safety management.
  • Understand the key principles required to comply with the planning, monitoring, and controlling of work related to fire safety management.

The course is run as a blended learning programme over a 4 week period. The course will begin with an online introduction (1.5 hours) to the current legislative landscape and the opportunity for delegates to discuss expectations before the classroom learning. Learners will be given relevant pre-course research tasks to carry out for discussion and debrief during the course.

The 2 day classroom learning with fire safety experts will cover:

  • Legislative change and impact
  • Fire safety culture, ethical behaviour, and professional standards
  • Structural fire protection and fire safety systems
  • Duty holder responsibilities
  • Evacuation strategies and emergency planning
  • The building safety case
  • Dealing with regulatory authorities
  • Leadership, teamwork, and people engagement
  • Risk management
  • Management of contractors and third party organisations

This course is suitable for those with management responsibilities for existing residential, mixed-use and high-rise residential properties.  Delegate are expected to have previous knowledge of life safety systems and may include roles such as:

  • Building Safety Managers
  • Fire Safety Managers and those in charge of fire protection implementation
  • Facility Managers
