The current legislation regarding means of escape in case of fire could be divided into two main areas – proposed buildings (including proposed extensions, material alterations or, in some cases, changes of use), and existing buildings. Where necessary, in order to safeguard the safety of relevant persons, it must be ensured that routes to emergency exits from premises and the exits themselves are kept clear at all times. A relevant person is any person who is or may be lawfully on the premises, or any person in the immediate vicinity who is at risk from a fire on the premises.
