No changes to Grenfell Tower before June 2022

Grenfell community to hear about work on Grenfell Tower that could lead to it being taken down to maintain safety.

Alistair Watters, Director of the Grenfell Site and Programme based in the Ministry for Housing and Local Government, wrote to the local Grenfell community to share information about decision making related to the Tower.

He said: “Following important advice from structural engineers about the condition of the Tower, we need to consider this summer if, and when, the Tower should be carefully taken down to maintain safety. This is so that we can plan for this as part of the ongoing safety works taking place within the Tower.”

Before any decision is made about the future of the Tower, Mr Watters said that bereaved, survivors and residents should have access to the advice and be able to question the engineers directly.

Setting out a schedule of proposed meetings for the local community, he added that they would have the opportunity to express priorities and preferences and learn about the ongoing consultation with the Metropolitan Police and the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

Mr Watters confirmed: Later this month, and after we have been able to discuss it with you first, we will publish the information that will inform a decision on the Tower. We will continue to offer you opportunities to meet with the MHCLG team, and the experts advising us, throughout May and beyond.”

The letter confirms that no changes will be made to the Tower prior to the fifth anniversary of the fire. There is a legal restriction in place so that the land cannot be used for any future purpose other than that agreed in line with the Grenfell Tower Memorial Principles.
