The practical route to understanding the installation, commissioning and maintenance of detection and alarm systems, emergency lights and the relevant legislative requirements

A five day course designed for those new to the fire detection and alarms industry who require a comprehensive understanding of systems and legislation as well as practical guidance in carrying out installation, commission and maintenance of systems.

Suitable for the apprentice fire alarm engineer, sellers and estimators, designers, premises managers and those fire wardens/marshalls who require a greater understanding of fire alarms. Also a great refresher for time served engineers. 

Using a combination of classroom and workshop facilities, practical skills can be taught and developed. You will be able to clearly demonstrate to customers and/or employers evidence of training matched against:

  • the National Occupational Standards in Systems
  • relevant British Standards (BS 5839 Part 1, plus parts 6, 8 and 9; BS 6266)
  • BS5266 2016 emergency lighting
  • BAFE SP203  / LPCB 1014 for Fire Detection & Alarm Systems
  • relevant legislation and guidance
  • a sector competence matrix agreed by sector employers

C14 Fire Detection, Alarms and Emergency Lighting Systems

On completion of this course learners will have:

  • installation BS 5839 Part 1 Section 5 - Practice and workmanship; Responsibilities of the installer; Reading building plans; Cabling; Inspection and testing; Certification; Co-operation with other systems; Actuations; Hazard areas; Data networks; Interconnections i.e. lifts, maglocks, access control, ARC connections, sprinklers
  • commissioning - The design certificate, install certificate and 'as fitted' drawing; Commission, certification, acceptance, verification process and documentation; Device and address; Cause and effect; BS 5839 Part 1 Section 5 in detail
  • understanding of the legal framework regarding fire detection and alarm systems including the Fire Safety Order 2005, Disability Discrimination Act / Equality Act and Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • knowledge of the different types of fire detection systems and latest alarm technology including their principles of operation.
  • understanding of the layout of a fire alarm system including specific references to power supplies, wiring and cabling.
  • appreciation of the testing and certification requirements.
  • an understanding of the differences between simple and complex premises.
  • servicing - As fitted' drawings, handbook; Test equipment (excluding weekly); BS 5839 Part 1 Section 6 including documentation and certification; False alarms reporting; False alarm monitoring, cause and effect, liaison; Panel interface; Periodic interval assessment; Battery back-up systems (vented)
  • a practical understanding of BS5266 2016 emergency lighting

Day 1: The first day of this course will cover the fundamentals of fire detection, alarm systems the legal framework.

Days 2-4: Using our workshop facilities, a combination of live demonstrations and hands of experience you will learn cable installation, testing and panel connections. Hands on commissioning and control panel functions and maintenance of systems.

Day 5: Focus on Emergency Lighting, legislation and standards. LEDs, way lighting, addressable central battery systems, self-contained, non-maintained and signage.
