This 2-day online tutor-led intermediate programme is designed for those who need to apply the principles of passive fire protection to ensure the structural integrity of existing systems following maintenance or refurbishment. Through the understanding of compartmentation and fire stopping, it will assist those who are dealing with contractors, building management, or those advising on or supervising maintenance works.

Learning Outcomes

This 2-unit qualification enables those with a basic knowledge of passive fire protection to gain confidence in the appraisal and correct application of products and practices according to relevant guidance and legislation.

Following this course, learners will be able to: 

  • Understand relevant factors that influence safe evacuation from a building in the event of a fire 

  • Apply the relevant guidance and regulations to the practice of remedial works and maintenance within buildings 

  • Recognise the roles and responsibilities with respect to record keeping and traceability of passive fire products through the lifecycle of the building 

  • Compare and appraise the different types of building products for passive fire protection and compartmentation systems

  • Awarding Body for Building Education (ABBE) Level 3 Award in Passive Fire Protection

  • How current legislation and guidance informs passive fire protection practices 

  • The role of compartmentation in the safe evacuation of premises 

  • Examination of third-party accreditation 

  • Identification of compartmentation structures 

  • Identification and best practice in the use of products including: fire doors, shutters and glazing, compartmentation, partitioning and ceiling systems, fire stopping, seals, cavity barriers and cladding, ducting and dampers 

  • The assessment process will be a portfolio of evidence
