Following the release of BS 8674:2025 setting out the framework for the assessment of fire risk assessor competency, the FPA launched a full suite of Fire Risk Assessment qualifications accredited by FireQual that directly align with the competency levels set out in the new standard:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment
  • Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment
  • Level 5 Certificate in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment

This bridging course is designed specifically for learners who have previously completed the ABBE Level 4 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment (through any training provider). It delivers the additional knowledge required to achieve the equivalent FireQual Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment, aligned with the Intermediate core competency level outlined in BS 8674.

Learners also receive six months’ limited access to the FPA Members’ Area which contains valuable fire safety resources including the document and webinar library, mini guides, advice and guidance articles, and the online Fire & Risk Management Journal.

Learning outcomes

This bridging course is self-study followed by an assessment and requires learners to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Apply fire safety principles to analyse information when undertaking fire risk assessments in buildings or premises that can be categorised as presenting a moderate risk
  • Interpret the role, responsibilities, and powers of enforcing authorities under all relevant fire safety legislation
  • Critically evaluate the requirements and limitations of specific fire safety measures that are required to mitigate fire development, growth, and spread
  • Understand how the principles of building and premises design, construction, and maintenance influence fire safety outcomes
  • Critically evaluate fire safety management systems used in buildings and premises that can be categorised as presenting a moderate risk.

Certification

Successful completion of this bridging course will provide learners with the FireQual Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment (RQF Level 4) - 610/6275/3.

Successful completion of this course also entitles learners to use post nominal letters.

How to apply

To apply for this course, learners are required to provide their qualification certificate for the ABBE Level 4 Diploma in in Fire Risk Assessment (RQF Level 4) - 603/4907/4, which can have been achieved through any training provider.

Learners should have suitable literacy, numeracy, and communications skills, and access to appropriate premises and equipment for the assessment.

Delivered as a self study and assessment only course, learners are required to:

  • Submit a fire risk assessment report for a moderate risk premises, aligned with the intermediate competency level of BS 8674, and completed within the last six months. This report must be different from the submission used to achieve the ABBE Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment.
  • Analyse a fictional fire risk assessment case study (provided) and respond to a series of questions relating to categorising risk, firefighting facilities, compartmentation, specialised protection systems, and Fire Risk Assessments of External Walls (FRAEW).

Assessments are designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and application of knowledge, ensuring a comprehensive measure of fire risk assessor competence. Learners will have four weeks from the course start date to complete the assessment criteria.
 

This bridging course is designed for learners who have previously completed the ABBE Level 4 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment (through any training provider) to bridge the knowledge gap and provide the equivalent FireQual Level 4 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment, aligned with the Intermediate core competency level outlined in BS 8674.
