Following the release of BS 8674:2025, which sets out the framework for the assessment of fire risk assessor competency, many existing fire risk assessors are now looking to align their experience with formal qualifications.
For those without a formal qualification or demonstrable skills, progressing directly to the Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment can be challenging, as completing the Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment (or equivalent) is required to meet entry criteria.
While prior experience in completing fire risk assessments in low to moderate risk premises may be used to evidence competency, learners may find this route difficult to demonstrate in practice.
To support learners, the FPA has introduced a Level 3 and Level 4 pathway package, designed to provide a clearer and more structured route forward.
This pathway allows learners to:
- Gain both the Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment and the Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment
- Build the formal qualification foundation required for enrolment onto the Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment
- Align your competency to the framework outlined in BS 8674
- Reduce the overall cost, with a £750.00 saving when enrolling in both qualifications together
Certification
On successful completion, learners will achieve:
- Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment (RQF Level 3) - 610/6233/9
- Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment (RQF Level 4) - 610/6275/3
How to apply
There are no formal requirements for entry onto the Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment.
Learners must successfully complete the Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment before progressing to the Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment, ensuring all prerequisite knowledge and evidence are in place.
Learners should have suitable literacy, numeracy, and communications skills, and access to appropriate premises and equipment for the assessment.
