Fundamental Engineering Mathematics

DURATION: 3 Days

PRICE: £725.00

COURSE CODE: C67

This 3-day basic engineering mathematics course encompasses complex mathematical concepts, providing learners with the knowledge and skills to attack mathematical engineering problems in context. The course is aimed at those looking for a career in fire engineering, or those within fire safety who wish to progress to a more technically competent role involving engineering maths or through higher level educational pathways such as a fire engineering degree.

Fundamental Engineering Mathematics provides an essential grounding in the rudimentary mathematical formulas to allow you to scrutinise and challenge decisions, or put forward solutions in a scientific way. It provides CPD and refresher knowledge for those returning to the industry, or a ‘taster route’ for those seeking to progress to a degree pathway in fire safety, or fire protection engineering.

Prerequisite

As day 1 recaps on aspects of GCSE Mathematics, it is assumed learners have achieved GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent) as prior learning.

Learning outcomes

Learners are taught mathematical concepts, and how to attack mathematical problems within a fire engineering context. Lessons consist of taught input and demonstration followed by worked examples and opportunities for learners to demonstrate and apply their workings either individually or in small groups or pairs.

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • explain the use of subscripts for the purposes of stating a point in time
  • use BIDMAS, BODMAS, and PEMDAS to solve equations
  • demonstrate an understanding of solving more complex order of function examples
  • demonstrate a clear and progressive approach to transposition
  • show understanding of transposition techniques to solve linear expressions
  • demonstrate mathematical reasoning for volume and capacity
  • solve resultant force problems
  • identify the key thermometric scales, the laws governing heat and energy, and their relationship to temperature
  • demonstrate solving simple SUVAT equations
  • demonstrate understanding of applying trigonometry to solve complex mechanical problems
  • describe the key characteristics of liquids and understand the subtle differences between the definition of fluids.

Certification

  • Fire Protection Association (FPA) Certificate
  • IFE CPD pending

Day 1 of the course provides a recap of mathematical terminology and order of functions, including instruction and application of coefficients, standard form, and transposition. Day 2 looks at linear, simultaneous, and quadratic equations, areas and volumes of 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, trigonometry, and resultant forces. Finally, Day 3 of this fire engineering course considers applying concepts to engineering principles in thermodynamics, hydraulics, mechanics, and gas laws.

  • Those working in fire safety building design
  • Those working in design of technical systems such as detection and suppression systems
  • Those preparing to enter higher level education via a fire safety engineering course
  • Those working with technical professionals who need to interpret, scrutinise or explain technical calculations.
