Research

The Fire Protection Association has been conducting fire research since 1946 and we offer one of the most versatile and comprehensive fire testing facilities in the UK at our state of the art Fire Testing and Research Laboratory based in Gloucestershire.

Since 2012, we have significantly expanded our fire safety research capabilities with a dedicated team of Fire Research Engineers who can design a wide range of fire safety tests to evaluate the ability of non-standard systems and applications to perform as intended.

Independent and impartial research and testing

The research and experimental fire testing we carry out at our fire research laboratory plays a critical role in shaping fire safety strategies, improving building resilience, informing regulatory and insurance practices, and ultimately reducing fire risk.

We also conduct extensive research and analysis of fire, security, and business interruption risks through RISCAuthority, an annually funded research scheme supported by a significant group of UK insurers and administered by the FPA, to produce guidance that addresses emerging risks with the aim of enhancing industry standards.
