Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a blaze at a mixed-use building in Euston on 6 March 2023
As reported by the London Fire Brigade (LFB), control officers received 14 calls regarding the fire on Tottenham Street just before 8am. Crews were mobilised from Soho, Euston, Islington, and surrounding fire stations, with firefighters using a 32-metre turntable ladder as an observation tower to provide the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.
In an update share on social media, LFB urged people to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed “due to smoke travel”.
Much of the ground floor was damaged by the fire, the brigade said. One man was rescued from the building by firefighters using a fire escape hood, which provides the public with up to 15 minutes of protection from four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride, and acrolein). He was later taken to hospital.
Locals told BBC News reporters of a “toxic and acrid smell” at the scene, with smoke visible from afar.
Station commander at the LFB, Alec McNally later said: "This morning crews were called to a fire at Tottenham Street that involved two buildings.
"[They] had to put out a fire that had developed onto an atrium-style conservatory, which was towards the roof of the building."
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service added: "We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team."
One fire appliance remained at the scene in the afternoon alongside the LFB’s fire investigation unit, with the cause of the fire still under investigation.
