Scrap metal fire on cargo ship found to be accidental

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) were called on to tackle the blaze on board a vessel docked in Hull

As reported by the BBC, on the morning of Friday 27 June, HFRS crews were called out to reports of a fire on board the Altay which was moored at Albert Dock in the city.

The blaze began in a cargo hold carrying 3,500 tonnes of scrap metal, with five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform deployed to work alongside port authorities to manage the incident. Work to fight the fire continued into the night, with it brought under control at around 5am the following morning.

With large plumes of smoke spreading across into Hull city centre during the incident, Humberside Police closed off a number of roads, whilst residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. The disruption caused by the smoke led to the temporary closure of Hull Combined Court and Hull Magistrates’ Court, as cases were adjourned or moved to virtual hearings.

In a statement, Glyn Saunders of HFRS explained that “the investigation is ongoing but we're looking at an accidental cause. It was a deep-seated fire and a challenging day, but one with a successful outcome."
