School report identifies fire safety issues

Concerns have been raised after a fire safety report for a secondary school in East Dunbartonshire has revealed significant fire safety failings

A recent fire risk assessment at Lenzie Academy, which looks after more than 1,300 pupils, showed there was a “substantial risk to life from fire”, BBC Scotland News reported.

Commissioned by East Dunbartonshire Council and dated 14 October 2025, the report shared numerous fire safety concerns, including fire exits not easily or immediately openable, fire doors not always closed or in a good condition, there was no suitable protection of escape routes, not all cooking appliances were maintained and in a good condition and combustible materials did not appear to be separated from ignition sources.

One parent told reporters that the academy was “not fit for purpose”, with the EIS teaching union also describing the conditions within the school as “dangerous”.

Area Officer Bora Oktas said: "The fire risk assessment clearly states there is a significant risk to life. Yet the council has refused to share this document with staff.

"The current situation leaves pupils and staff vulnerable to a range of risks.

"We urge the council to take immediate steps to ensure the building is secure, safe, and fit for learning. Preventative action now is essential to avoid any future incidents that could compromise the wellbeing of the school community."

Twenty-five recommendations have been listed in the report, including upgrading all fire doors that do not offer at least 30 minutes of fire resistance, ensuring fire extinguishers hidden behind doors are easily accessible, and that combustible material is stored properly.

The council’s chief executive, Ann Davie, said: "The health, safety and wellbeing of all of our staff and pupils is a priority for the council.

"We have only recently received the Fire Safety Risk Assessment for Lenzie Academy and officers across the council are working at pace with the school to address the recommendations.”

A technical note was also issued by East Dunbartonshire Council, which stated: “Elected Members will be aware of recent news articles regarding Lenzie Academy Fire Safety Risk Assessment.

Council Officers have reviewed the Risk Assessment and can confirm that the actions are already being addressed and an action plan has been shared with the school and teaching unions.”
