Guidance on living walls shortlisted for a London Construction Award 2025

After a record number of entries, the FPA’s collaborative document Green and Living Walls as External Cladding has been selected on the shortlist for the Excellence in Sustainability – Project category at this year’s London Construction Awards.

The guide provides a comprehensive review of the core principles of risk control for living walls and includes an in-depth questionnaire that allows the opportunity for a specifier, façade designer, or architect to describe the proposed living wall system to any authority having jurisdiction.

Technical Director at the FPA, George Edwardes, said of the nomination, “We are very pleased that the important work done on providing guidance to those wishing to include living wall systems in their buildings has been recognised.

Collaborative projects that bring together knowledge and expertise from various relevant organisations are key to ensuring our built environment meets both its environmental and risk control goals.”

Commenting on the guide at the time of its release, project lead and Technical Consultant for the FPA, Professor Jim Glockling explained that “the new risk management document, produced with exceptional collaboration between all stakeholders, sets out an agreed suite of core control principles, provides a framework for information exchange with the AHJ, and establishes methods of control so that the design may be tailored to meet the needs of all. With some solution parameters currently unverified, the document is as much a call for further research and testing as it is a guidance document.”

The London Construction Awards are designed to celebrate achievements, developments, and innovation across the UK’s construction industry and feature a wide range of categories for solution providers, suppliers, contractors, architects, civil engineers, developers, local authorities and more.

The judging panel for the awards draws from local and national government, industry, and representative groups, and the awards ceremony will be hosted by Seann Walsh on Friday 26 September at the Novotel West London.
