An update to the British Standard BS 8674 Built environment – framework for competence of individual fire risk assessors – Code of practice is now available for public comment.
As part of the development process for the new BSI standard, BS 8674 Built environment – framework for competence of individual fire risk assessors – Code of practice, the completed draft has now been opened to the public for further comment.
With a remit to give recommendations for competence criteria to be met by individuals undertaking general fire risk assessments in occupied buildings, BS 8674 is based upon the work done in the Fire Sector Federation’s approved code of practice for fire risk assessors, and on the recommendations and competence criteria set out in BS 8670-1.
As detailed by the BSI, the competence criteria recommended in this British Standard are “applicable to non-invasive fire risk assessments of existing fire safety measures that can be attained through visual examination”.
The draft document for this proposed BS 8674 standard lays out the criteria for three core levels of competence: Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. The criteria reflect requirements to assess buildings constructed using conventional materials and systems and takes into account that in some buildings additional specialised guidance might be required.
The opportunity for the public to comment on the draft details of this proposed standard opened on 15 August 2024 and will remain so for two months, closing on 15 October 2024.
