Wind turbines and power distribution: understanding the key hazards and risk control measures

LOCATION: Online

DATE: 24 April 2025 10:00

DURATION: 1 hour 15 minutes

Wind generation is now an essential part of the UK’s electrical energy supplies, with new installations continuously being added. From reported data, between October and December 2020 37% of the UK electricity supply was produced by renewables – a large part of this being wind generation, using circa. 11,000 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of circa. 14 GW (Gigawatts) of onshore capacity and 12 GW of offshore capacity.

In this webinar, Adrian Butler, an independent Consultant Risk Engineer, will give an insight into upcoming RISCAuthority guidance on wind turbines, switchgear and transformers. Adrian will provide a general overview of the main types of onshore wind turbines, the hazards presented by wind turbine installations, and the risk control measures that can be applied to avoid and mitigate these hazards.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the most common types of wind turbines and their main characteristics
  2. Identify key hazards and risk controls for typical wind turbines
  3. Be familiar with key fire safety arrangements, and the maintenance, inspections, and tests recommended for electrical transformers and switchgear

CPD

Delegates who attend for the duration can claim up to 1 CPD hour towards the CII/Personal Finance Society member CPD scheme or 1 hour of FPA CPD (selection to be made during the registration process).
