College tackles fire and security skills shortage head on

Four fire and security apprentices celebrate victory in an installation competition to secure a place at Engineers of Tomorrow competition, taking place at Firex and IFSEC International, 19-21 June 2018.

Four fire and security apprentices are celebrating victory in an installation competition that secures them a place at the prestigious national engineering competition, Engineers of Tomorrow.

Timed to coincide with Scottish Apprenticeship Week (5-9 March) New College Lanarkshire’s Electrical Fire and Security Skills Challenge saw more than 30 apprentices compete in a two-day challenge.

New College Lanarkshire, which has been in the top three institutions at WorldSkills UK for the last five years, hosts the competition every year.

Participants, attending specialist facilities at the College’s Motherwell Campus, were tested on their aptitude for fitting fire and intruder alarms.

Trevor Jenks from the SSAIB assessed them on health and safety, installation, testing and recording of operational checks and handing over the system.

The winners from each stage and overall winner from each day secured a sponsored place at this year’s Engineers of Tomorrow competition, which will take place at London ExCeL during Firex and IFSEC International, taking place 19-21 June 2018.

This year the competition is taking a further step towards tackling the growing engineering skills gap by adding a live installation challenge for fire apprentices, as well as for those from the security sector, following a successful trial in 2017.

Taking place over three days at London ExCeL, the competition will pit more than 60 young engineers – working in teams of two – against each other. The heat winners – one team per day – will then be invited to the Security & Fire Excellence Awards in November 2018, where an overall winner will be announced. The winner will claim a £1,000 prize.

FIREX International is the only event that connects the global fire and security markets.

It gives fire and security professionals access to the very latest technology from suppliers across the world, cutting-edge solutions and the essential knowledge to ensure life safety
