Waste guidelines document

The FPA has published a guidance document entitled 'European guideline: Safety distances between waste containers and buildings' on behalf of the Confederation of Fire Protection Associations in Europe (CFPA Europe).

The document is designed to help building owners and occupiers to prevent the spread of fire from outside waste containers and other combustible objects to nearby buildings. Fires in such containers are often the result of arson; a relatively small waste container fire can result in a large fire if it reaches a building. The guidance is based upon methods of calculation which have been developed from an analysis of fire investigations and empirical knowledge gained in such investigations.

While the guidance is primarily aimed at those responsible for safety in organisations, it is also addressed to rescue services, consultants and safety companies, so that, in the course of their work, they may be able to help organisations to increase levels of fire safety.

The guidance was compiled by the Guidelines Commission and has been adopted by all fire protection associations in CFPA Europe.

The document is priced £8.50 for FPA members and £10.00 for non-members.  For further information or to purchase the publication, please contact the FPA on tel: +44 (0)1608 812 500.
