Disabled firefighters group receives cash boost

A GROUP that supports disabled firefighters in the UK is to receive a £10,000 grant from the Government so it can be set up on a national scale.

The National Disabled Fire Association (NDFA) will use the money – being provided by Communities and Local Government – to create an effective administration framework and get a national membership subscription scheme up-and-running.

The Association provides a support network for disabled firefighters and also helps disabled people in the community engage positively with fire and rescue services.

Commenting on the move, Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda said: ‘The NDFA has the potential to play a key role in supporting firefighters affected by disability and providing advice to fire and rescue services, but it needs to reach a wider audience.’

To date, the NDFA has relied on the goodwill of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, which has provided office space and staff time. However, to reach a national audience, it needs a more permanent source of funding and is now aiming to build links with all UK fire services.
