About the FPA
Aims and key activities
The Fire Protection Association is the UK’s national fire safety organisation, one of 28 similar national bodies worldwide. It was established in 1946 and has strong support from the insurance industry, primarily through the Association of British Insurers and Lloyd’s.
The FPA’s mandate is:
- to protect people, property and the environment by advancing fire prevention and protection techniques
- to collaborate with its members, insurers, central and local government, the fire service and others in this work
- to help focus national and international attention on such issues
- to influence related decision-making of individual consumers and businesses
- to collect, analyse and publish statistics, identify trends and promote research
- to publish guidance, recommendations and codes of practice
- to disseminate advice.
In carrying out these functions, the FPA’s core departments are Publications, Training, Technical Consultancy and Membership.
Publications
The FPA supplies the UK’s most comprehensive range of publications in the fields of fire safety, fire prevention and related topics. The range covers a wide variety of products including videos, DVDs, CDs and online services, books, codes of practice, recommendations, reports, leaflets, pocket cards and posters. FPA publications provide invaluable information and guidance to meet all your fire safety needs, from staff training and educational resources through to detailed technical reference materials.

Training
The FPA has been providing training courses for over 35 years and delivers one of the most comprehensive ranges of fire safety training courses in the United Kingdom. The Training Department currently offers approximately 55 different courses covering fire safety management, fire safety engineering, health and safety and N/SVQs in fire safety. This is in addition to organising regular topical seminars and bespoke training tailored to our clients’ specific requirements.

Technical Consultancy
The FPA Technical Directorate undertake research, audits, fire risk assessments and consultancy in support of all aspects of fire prevention and protection. Extensive studies are routinely undertaken on behalf of commerce and industry, insurers, military, local government and the public sector, to name but a few. Our recognised experts offer a truly comprehensive service, which can be tailored to meet your precise requirements, as well as ensuring conformity with current legislation and codes of practice.

Membership
The FPA offers a graded membership scheme which is designed to enable companies to choose a fire safety package to meet their exact requirements. Bronze membership provides subscribers with a monthly copy of Fire Risk Management Journal and online access to current and back issues of the journal, plus significant discounts on FPA training courses and publications and a range of other benefits. Silver membership offers all the benefits of bronze membership plus exclusive online access to a range of FPA publications and guidance documents worth over £750.00.
